Summary

Most of the compressors used in air conditioning are rotary compressors (20 million out of a total of 23 million in the world), but some problems of efficiency arise when HFCs are used in this type of compressor. The author compares R134a, R407C and R410A with R22, from the point of view of efficiency and lubrication. He concludes that R407C is the most suitable for rotary compressors in air conditioning. Then he analyses the effects of the use of this refrigerant on rotary compressors: (friction, pressure separation), Tests carried out by the author on a split air conditioner using a rotary compressor with R407C have shown that the refrigerating capacity of the compressor is reduced by 3% immediately and by 27% in the long run. He recommends the use of a patented oscillating compressor. The piston is of the same type as that of a rotary compressor, but is oscillating. Tests show that friction and pressure losses are reduced and the efficiency improved with this compressor, in comparison with conventional rotary compressors. This compressor is also more compatible with the use of a velocity controller (inverter).
