A reliability assessment of retrofitting R22 and mineral oil or alkylbenzene systems to R407C and polyol ester oil.

Summary

The study details an assessment of fifteen air conditioning units which were designed for and operated with R22 and alkylbenzene or mineral oil, then retrofit with ICI KLEA 407C (R407C) and ICI EMKARATE RL68H (polyolester or POE) oil. After retrofit, the units were subjected to an endurance test to determine the impact of this change. The results of this program show that a retrofit can be achieved without long-term performance degradation or reliability problems provided certain precautions are observed.
