A residential ammonia heat pump: comparison with non-natural refrigerants for two different heat sources.

Author(s) : JONASSEN O., HARDARSON V.

Summary

An ammonia heat pump has been built for residential heating in Norwegian semi-coastal climate (Trondheim) and operated for nine seasons based on ambient air and two seasons based on energy wells as the heat source. Simulations are made to compare the two heat sources. Key values are shown for main components and energy savings during the heating season. These values are compared with simulated results for the same heat pump using R-134a, R-404A, R-410A and R-407C, both for ambient air and energy wells. The simulations were run with the same compressor and heat exchanger sizes and design for the simulation results to be directly comparable.
