Summary

There is an increasingly urgent need to identify environmentally friendly substitute working fluids to replace high-GWP HFCs in the refrigeration industry. Many compounds have been considered and/or are being considered for refrigeration applications, however, only some of them have been proven and/or are being proven to be suitable for commercial refrigeration applications due to stringent safety criteria (e.g., flammability, toxicity, etc.) and environmental criteria (e.g., low GWP, low ODP, high energy efficiency, etc.). The most studied alternatives to date have focused on halogenated olefins.

In this work, the most studied (till now) halogenated olefins are considered, namely, 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (R1234yf), trans-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (R1234ze(E)), 1,3,3,3-tetrafluoroprop-1-ene (R1234ze(Z)) and trans-1-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoro-1-propene (R1233zd(E)). An exhaustive review is conducted of their thermophysical properties, heat transfer characteristics and possible applications.
