Summary
(1) The Fisheries Industry in Fiji is one of the most potential industries that is looked upon in boosting Fiji’s foreign exchange earnings. (2) It is currently the third largest export industry in Fiji whereby Tuna Industry is the sector that is of greatest demand. With Fijis Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ) of 1.3 million square miles of ocean, Fiji has a rich resource of commercial exploitation and is also there to meet the subsistence need of 85% of villages located on the coastal areas. (3) The industry currently employs approximately more than 3000 people in Fiji. (4) The Government spends more than 20 million dollars in the development of the sector. (5) Example of a retrofitting R22 to R404A for a fishing vessel.
