ADSORPTION PROCESSES IN KINETIC CARBONS.

Summary

KINETIC CARBONS ARE EFFECTIVE IN AIR SEPARATION BY PSA SINCE THEY ADSORB AND DESORB OXYGEN QUICKLY, BUT NITROGEN SLOWLY. THE ADSORPTION PROPERTIES ARE: (1) THE EQUILIBRIUM CAPACITY ; (2) THE KINETIC SELECTIVITY ; AND (3) THE SPEED OF OXYGEN ADSORPTION. WORK PRESENTED SHOWS THAT 2 FURTHER PARAMETERS ARE NEEDED, THE MECHANISM OF SORPTION AND THE KINETIC HETEROGENEITY. ON THE LEVEL OF INDIVIDUAL PELLETS THIS TERM MAY BE EXPRESSED AS THE COEFFICIENT OF VARIANCE OF THE RATE CONSTANTS. THE APPARENT MECHANISM OF SORPTION IS SHOWN TO BE A FUNCTION OF THE PELLET HETEROGENEITY.
