THE PAPER IS A COMPREHENSIVE SURVEY OF THE PRESENT STATE OF AFFAIRS REGARDING THE PLACE OF CFCS IN OZONE DEPLETION AND GLOBAL WARMING, THE PROGRESS TOWARDS VIABLE ALTERNATIVES AND THE RESEARCH AND TESTING PROGRAMMES NOW UNDER WAY. THE GENERAL EXPECTATION SUGGESTS R134A AND R125 WILL BE ALTERNA-TIVES FOR R12 AND R502 AND POSSIBLY R123 FOR R11, WITH R22 CONTINUING IN USE AT LEAST UNTIL MID CENTURY. OF THE NEW COMPOUNDS, R134A IS LIKELY TO BE AVAILABLE IN COMMERCIAL QUANTITIES IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE 1990S. D.W.H.
