Air cycle systems for transport refrigeration.

Author(s) : SICARS S., KRUSE H.

Summary

The requirements of transport refrigeration are discussed, with a view to selecting a suitable system featuring a natural fluid for these applications. Small systems, such as in rail freight cars, trucks and containers were identified as the most difficult for application of a natural fluid. Air was chosen as a fluid. Several cycles were compared, leading to the selection of a semi-open, low-pressure cycle with a two-stage compression and one-stage expansion. So that this cycle could be used, a rotating regenerator had to be incorporated into the system design. The basics of humidity transfer with such a regenerator are given to demonstrate the benefits of its use in air cycle equipment.
