Alternative refrigerant effect on compressor design.

Author(s) : DI FLORA M.

Summary

A few years ago, it was not too difficult to predict system performance effect on increasing compressor performance. The alternative refrigerants being looked at to replace R22 may have glide and/or significantly different heat transfer properties that are not accounted for in the standard compressor calorimeter test. The alternative refrigerant may also require a lubrication oil that looks excellent on an accelerated life test conducted on a vapour stand, but behave very differently in an actual system. Do the complexities of alternative refrigerants require compressor manufacturer-system manufacturer partnerships in the development of CFC-HCFC alternative refrigerant solutions?
