Summary
The paper presents a number of advantages and the few drawbacks of ammonia as a refrigerant. Advantages are mainly related to cost of investment, refrigerating machine efficiency, and no environmental damage. Toxicity is the only disadvantage, that can be couteracted with some new techniques permitting the reduction of refrigerant load, and the limitation or suppression of leakage. Finally, ammonia benefits from a more than 100 years experience in industrial refrigeration.
