THE EXISTENCE OF A POTENTIAL HAZARD IN THE USE OF AMMONIA SHOULD BE CONSIDERED IN THE DESIGN AND BUILDING OF COLD STORES AND DURING THEIR OPERATION. THE AUTHOR EXAMINED CASE REPORTS FROM AMMONIA ACCIDENTS AND DRAWS ATTENTION ON TWO POTENTIAL HAZARDS: FAULTY WELDING AND CORROSION, WHICH CAN BE PREVENTED BY THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUITABLE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS AND A STRICT SUPERVISION OF WORK. HE STRESSES THE SIGNIFICANCE OF IMMEDIATE ALARM. THERE ARE AMMONIA DETECTORS ADAPTED TO LOW TEMPERATURES AND SOME APPLICATION TESTS ARE DESCRIBED.
