Summary

THE VAPORIZATION OF LIQUID N-BUTANE AT ITS SUPERHEAT LIMIT TEMPERATURE IS FILMED AT SPEEDS OF UP TO 500,000 FRAMES PER SECOND AND THE ASSOCIATED FAR-FIELD PRESSURE IS STUDIED. BUBBLE GROWTH RATES OF UP TO 25 M/S ARE MEASURED AND COMPARED WITH THEORETICAL MODELS AND PREVIOUS EXPERIMENTAL DATA. THE FARFIELD PRESSURE IS DISTORTED BY MULTIPLE REFLECTIONS WITHIN THE BUTANE DROPLETS, ALTHOUGH THIS DOES NOT EXPLAIN ALL THE STRUCTURE IN THE FIRST 13 MICROSECONDS OR SO OF THE RECORDED PRESSURES.
