Analysis of hysteresis and polarity influence in nucleate pool boiling under DC electric field.

Summary

An experimental study on the effect of a strong electric field on nucleate pool boiling is presented. The results show an enhancement of heat transfer and a disappearance of the hysteresis phenomenon. Mechanisms governing the hysteresis phenomenon in an uniform electric field are analyzed. The vanishing of the hysteresis phenomenon is due to a change in the liquid wettability. The effect of the electric field polarity is also described. It has been found that the heat transfer enhancement for a negative polarity is greater than the one for a positive polarity. This difference is due to the orientation and the strength of the electric forces which depend on the electric field polarity.
