Deformation and departure of a bubble attached to a wall in a uniform or non-uniform electric field.

Summary

The effects of an electric field on the behaviour of a bubble attached to a wall are investigated by the numerical and experimental studies. Specifically, the equilibrium bubble shape and departure volume under the uniform and nonuniform electric fields are analyzed. The numerically generated composite orthogonal coordinate system is employed for the numerical studies based on a finite-difference solution of the governing equations. In experimental studies, a bubble generated by the injection of air through the tip is visualized for the three types of electrode system. A bubble is found to be extended in the direction parallel to the applied electric field. The elongation increases with the increase of the electric field strength and the height of tip. It is also observed that a highly elongated bubble has a shape with slender waist. Shape and volume variations of the bubble are studied.
