Summary

TWO-DIMENSIONAL FREEZING IS ANALYZED BY THE FINITE-ELEMENT METHOD AND THE RESULTS ARE COMPARED WITH EXPERIMENTAL DATA. THE ANALYTICALLY DETERMINED SHAPE OF THE FREEZING INTERFACE, ITS RATE OF GROWTH, AND THE TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTION AS DETERMINED BY TREATING HEAT TRANSFER IN BOTH THE SOLID AND LIQUID PHASES AS PURE CONDUCTION DIFFER SOMEWHAT FROM THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS, WHICH REVEAL A NEARLY UNIFORM TEMPERATURE DUE TO NATURAL CONVECTION. A MODIFIED MODEL WHICH ASSUMES COMPLETE MIXING IN THE LIQUID PHASE PROVIDES BETTER AGREEMENT WITH THESE DATA.
