Summary

THE STUDY EXAMINES EXPERIMENTALLY THE TRANSIENT FREEZING PROCESS IN THE CURVED CHANNEL CONTAINING FLOWS AND THE INTERFACE HEAT TRANSFER. INLET REYNOLDS NUMBER WAS FROM 200 TO 3,040 CORRESPONDING TO THE DEAN NUMBER OF 64 TO 973 FOR A WALL TEMPERATURE OF 268 TO 258 K (-5 TO -15 DEG C). ACCELERATION OF THE WATER BY FREEZING AND THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CURVED CHANNEL AT THE WATER-ICE INTERFACE PRODUCE GREATER HEAT TRANSFER THROUGH THE THIN FREEZE LAYER THAN WOULD EXIST WITHOUT SOLIDIFICATION. THE AVERAGE NUSSELT NUMBER AROUND THE WALL IS EXPRESSED BY A DIMENSIONLESS TIME FUNCTION AND INLET REYNOLDS NUMBER.
