Summary
Annual performance factor (APF) is employed to indicate the average annual energy consumption efficiency of air conditioners. A higher APF corresponds to better performance. The APF calculation method for packaged air conditioners is stipulated by Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) B 8616:2006. For an inverter-driven compressor air conditioners, the CD value, which determines the degradation in energy efficiency, is set to zero when the minimum capacity of the test air conditioner is smaller than half its rated capacity, which is the case for almost all packaged air conditioners in the Japanese market. In order to evaluate whether the APF calculated using JIS B 8616:2006 corresponds to the actual annual energy consumption efficiency, a systematic investigation was conducted using four packaged air conditioners having rated cooling capacities of 7 kW each and two multi-type air conditioners having cooling capacities of 28 kW each: the air conditioners were produced by different manufacturers. Cooling performance was tested at rated capacity and half capacity, and tests were carried out under partial load conditions with load ratios ranging from 15 to 50%. Similarly, heating performance was tested under several temperature and load ratio conditions. The measured APF was compared with the value calculated according to JIS, and it was found that when the compressor works intermittently, the calculated APF differed greatly from the measured value, with the largest deviation being about 42%. On the basis of the experimental results, we propose a new rating method that involves changing the CD from zero to 0.25 in order to provide the actual operating performance, especially under low load ratio conditions. By using the proposed new rating method, the mean deviation between the calculated APF and the measured APF has been reduced to less than 3%.
