Theoretical study comparing energy consumption using low GWP blends for heat recovery in a supermarket refrigeration system.

Summary
The use of low GWP HFO based refrigerants is expanding into applications, such as multi-compressor supermarket refrigeration, which were probably not originally envisaged when A2L classified refrigerants first became available. The beneficial performance of A2L HFO based refrigerants for refrigeration only, has been proven, but as the focus on total energy consumption sharpens there is a question as to whether HFO blends can be used effectively for heat recovery to further decrease energy consumption and total emissions. This paper presents the results of a theoretical study comparing HFO based refrigerants with R-744 in a number of different heat recovery scenarios for a typical 2000 m² retail area supermarket, in two different geographical locations representing moderate and hot European climates. In addition to using the energy cost and carbon dioxide emissions from energy factors for those two locations, the study also considers the same performance in a low cost/low energy emissions scenario.
