Summary

The cooling load of common cargo vessels consumes 5 to 15% of the onboard power supply. Reefers, LNG carriers and refrigerated container ships require even more cooling and electricity for cooling generation. At the same time, a lot of excess heat is usually available from the main engine or the diesel generator. The German company EAW, in cooperation with the Institute of Air Handling and Refrigeration, developed water/LiBr absorption chillers that are adapted to the requirements of marine application. With the support of Dr. Wild engineering consultants, first commercial projects that use 140 kW absorption chillers on innovative vessels could be implemented. This new path in maritime refrigeration will help to reduce the carbon footprint of maritime transport and to cut fuel expenses in times of rising oil prices.
