Summary

Autologous stem cell transplantation is used after high-dose chemotherapy for treating haematological and other malignancies. Bone marrow harvested for transplantation may contain residual malignant cells even during remission. Purging marrow of potentially malignant cells may delay hemopoietic reconstitution and may not be effective. In the study, in vitro hypothermia was used to selectively purge residual malignant cells preceding autologous stem cell transplantation.
