Summary

THIS PAPER PRESENTS THE METHODOLOGY USED TO ANALYSE THE BENEFI TS OF A NATIONALLY IMPLEMENTED ENERGY MANAGEMENT STRATEGY IN COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS. THE AIM OF THE RESEARCH ON WHICH THE PAPER IS BASED WAS TO EVALUATE THE COST EFFECTIVENESS OF A RANGE OF ENERGY MANAGEMENT MEASURES IN OFFICES AND HOSPITALS. THE MEASURES EVALUATED INCLUDED LOW COST OPTIONS SUCH AS THE ALTERATION OF TEMPERATURES ; MEDIUM COST OPTIONS SUCH AS THE INSTALLATION OF OPTIMISERS AND COMPUTERISED ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS ; AND HIGH COST OPTIONS SUCH AS HEAT PUMPS AND THE INSTALLATION OF INSULATION IN EXISTING BUILDINGS. A MODEL OF ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN THE COMMERCIAL BUILDING SECTOR WAS DEVELOPED FOR THE PROJECT, ALONG WITH A METHOD OF SPECIFYING ENERGY MANAGEMENT MEASURES.
