Summary

TEMPERATURE DEPENDENCES OF THE CRITICAL SHEAR STRESS AND OF THE SENSITIVITY OF THE STRESS TO THE DEFORMATION RATE HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED ON HIGH PURITY TIN SINGLE CRYSTALS BETWEEN 0.5 AND 4.4 K. BELOW 1 K, BOTH CHARACTERISTICS APPEARED TO BE INDEPENDENT OF TEMPERATURE. ACTIVATION ANALYSIS SHOWED THAT THE CLASSICAL ARRHENIUS RATE EQUATION IS NOT VALID BELOW 1 K. THE RESULTS ARE INTERPRETED AS MANIFESTATION OF QUANTUM EFFECTS IN TIN BELOW 1 K.
