Summary
Worldwide, about 130 million cars have been equipped with air conditioning. At present, Europe is making up for lost time and the percentage of new air-conditioned cars has risen from 10% in the mid-1980s to 60% today and this percentage is expected to level off at about 85-90% penetration in 2003-2005. Today, there is a marked market-driven trend towards wider use of ventilation located under the dashboard and refrigerating loops and components, particularly in European-manufactured cars. This trend is likely to continue, and the air-conditioning systems of the future will have to be adapted to address environmental, fuel-consumption and vehicle-technology development issues.
