Basic GAX cycle prototype results.

Summary

A breadboard prototype of a gas-fired heat pump using the basic generator absorber heat exchange (GAX) cycle has been developed. The objective of this project was to demonstrate attainment of the higher COPs promised by the basic GAX cycle using reliable and cost-effective components capable of operating at all expected ambient conditions. The prototype was operated for more than 1400 hours over a range of generator and absorber pressures and temperatures, and generator heat inputs. A promising horizontal generator design was developed which provides almost three stages of countercurrent rectification. The GAX component performance was 85% of design. Results are given for several temperature and pressure conditions.
