Summary
Companies that act as intermediaries play an increasing role in procurements for supermarkets. Wholesale markets are holding firm, despite a declining number of wholesalers, who seek to diversify their operations. Small retailers have maintained a substantial share of the Belgian market, but have become less significant in the Netherlands, where the retailers' association is mobilizing in support of its members. Supermarkets are developing new concepts for their outlets, particularly in Belgium, to better meet consumer expectations. Demand is on the rise in Belgium, but still shrinking in the Netherlands.
