California disagrees with federal definition of "fresh" poultry.

Type of article: Article

Summary

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) plans to reexamine its policy regarding the labeling of poultry as "fresh". California recently enacted a law restricting the use of the term "fresh" to poultry that has never been at or below -4 deg C, in contrast to the current FSIS limit of -18 deg C. In response to a lawsuit filed by three organizations, a federal judge temporarily stopped enforcement of the state law and asked FSIS to advise the court.
