Summary
Carbon dioxide (CO2, R744) has a number of properties that make it an attractive working fluid for refrigeration systems, as demonstrated by the marked resurgence of CO2 as a refrigerant in recent years. It is suitable for a range of applications and can be utilised within a variety of system architectures, but also requires specific design considerations in order to ensure robust, efficient operation. From an industrial refrigeration perspective, CO2 can offer a natural, low-GWP alternative to traditional synthetic refrigerants as well as a low-toxicity, non-flammable alternative to ammonia. It can also be used effectively in combination with ammonia, for example as a secondary refrigerant or in the low stage of a cascade system.
