Summary

Spanish translation of an article presented at an IIR Meeting at Aarhus, Denmark, September 3-6, 1996 (see IIR Bulletin, reference 97-2808). Ammonia is ecologically safe but its application in spaces with a large number of occupants is restricted. For these applications indirect systems are required. Carbon dioxide is ecologically safe too, has acceptable COP values for low temperature applications and is a perfect medium to be used as secondary coolant in low temperature applications. Ammonia-carbon dioxide systems have perspectives to fulfill the criteria superimposed to alternatives. A comparison is made between an ammonia refrigeration system coupled with a conventional secondary refrigerant loop, the same ammonia cycle cascaded with a CO2 cycle at the low operating temperature level and the same ammonia cycle coupled with a secondary CO2 refrigerant loop.
