Centrifugal compressor modifications required to maintain heat pump efficiency and capacity with alternative refrigerants.

Summary

The paper discusses the effect of alternative refrigerants on centrifugal compressor performance. An explanation is given for the sometimes seemingly contradictory claims with respect to the effect of alternative refrigerant substitution on capacity and power consumption. The changes in impeller speed or diameter required to maintain compressor peak efficiency after a change in refrigerant and the corresponding changes in capacity are derived. The real challenge of centrifugal compressor retrofit: maintaining heat pump efficiency and capacity after a change in refrigerant is illustrated for two refrigerant transitions (R11 to R123 and R22 to R134a). It is shown that for centrifugal compressors it is often possible to regain original heat pump capacity with the new refrigerant through relatively minor changes of a few internal parts.
