Characterization of CO2-containing hydrate slurries.

Summary

In this paper, the suitability of CO2-containing hydrate slurries in secondary refrigeration was investigated by relying on solid fraction and pressure drop determinations. Some CO2-containing hydrates present melting enthalpies higher than that of ice. Slurries with high hydrate solid fractions (< 30 %) may therefore carry sufficient latent heat for a use as two-phase secondary refrigerant. Yet, these solid-rich slurries need to flow with appropriate rheological and thus thermal characteristics in order to transfer efficiently the energy. A hydrate solid fraction model was used in the present work to calculate the hydrate fraction from pressure and temperature conditions. This model was associated to pressure drop measurements performed on CO2 hydrate slurries flowing in an experimental loop. Only results with slurry fraction less than 10% are presented here. Finally, a classical pressure drop model was compared to experimental results and showed difficulties to predict efficiently slurry behavior even at low fraction.
