Summary

Bench Testing of a Cooler Burundi, like many developing countries, is facing very great losses of fruit and vegetables because of a lack of knowledge or a total absence of knowledge of modern preservation methods, for example refrigeration. However, the use of a "cooler with a charcoal chamber" has already been tested in other developing countries, is a method which is likely to be affordable for many inhabitants, and would help limit these losses. This is why we decided to test this method at our faculty (Faculty of Engineering Sciences, University of Burundi) in order to propose it to the citizens of our country. Although the test was carried out during the rainy season (April 2015), the results obtained were very interesting. The test was carried out on tomatoes, aubergines, sweet peppers and amaranths and showed that these products could be stored for nine days without losses, whereas with the technology currently used in retail settings, their shelf life varied between two and three days for the majority of these products.
