CO2-only refrigeration systems with two-stage gas coolers for the Australian climate.

Summary

The authors modelled the operation of CO2-only systems in combination with two-stage gas coolers with wetted second stage for Australian conditions, and demonstrate that in most areas of Australia such systems exhibit lower power consumption than conventional dry air-cooled R404A systems both during winter and typical summer conditions. The systems are shown to have marginally higher power consumption during peak summer conditions than R404A systems with large condensers and wet-pad air precooling, but would consume 80% less water under these conditions. Using an alternative modelling approach, the authors also modelled the operation of CO2-only systems with two-stage gas coolers with booster cooled second stage and found these systems to offer further efficiency gains over wetted second stage systems for humid climates, and no water consumption under all operating conditions.
