Cogeneration of energy as a strategy for an increased efficiency.

Author(s) : SOARES C.

Summary

An approach to combined heat and power and its evolution in Portugal is presented. A short and general description of the different approaches to cogeneration is given, namely the topping, bottoming and combined cycle and the opportunity for buildings integration. A brief description of cogeneration and available technologies, systems and their comparative characterization, through investment; operation and efficiency parameters is also presented. The results of a sensibility analysis survey of equivalent electrical efficiency as a function of electrical power range and waste heat demand, are shown for 4 operating scenarios. The main conclusions drawn from the sensibility analysis survey stress out that the outstanding effect on energy efficiency associated with cogeneration relays on the waste heat quantity and quality.
