Summary

THE PROBLEM REFERS TO STEAM HEATING COILS WITH PARALLEL MULTIPLE TUBES. IF THE FEED IS FROM A TOP HEADER, ANY TUBE EXPERIENCING DIFFERENT HEAT TRANSFER CONDITIONS, EG FROM POOR AIR DISTRIBUTION OVER THE BATTERY, WILL CONDENSE AT A DIFFERENT RATE THUS CAUSING UNEQUAL PRESSURE AT TUBE OUTLETS, HENCE A TENDENCY TO BACK UP CONDENSATE. FEED METHODS ARE ILLUSTRATED WHICH AVOID THIS. BAD INSTALLATION MAY PRODUCE VARIABLE GRAVITY EFFECTS AND POOR VENTING CAN GIVE ACCUMULATIONS OF NON-CONDENSIBLES. CONTROL LIMITS MAY ALSO RESULT IN CONDENSATION AT BELOW TRAP DRAINAGE PRESSURE, RESULTING ALSO IN CONDENSATE BACK UP. POOR STEAM TRAP SIZING MAY ALSO BE RESPONSIBLE. D.W.H.
