Summary

This article presents the Spanish translation of the Bulletin of the IIR reference 2001-0199. Medium-temperature display cases consume roughly 18% of the total electricity used by a supermarket. Open multideck meat/dairy/deli cases can account for up to 25% of the refrigeration energy consumption. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies fresh meat, deli and dairy products as hazardous foods and require them to be stored at less than 5 °C at all times. In the absence of unbiased performance test data, the equipment purchasing staff for supermarkets frequently rely on the manufacturers' literature with respect to the performance and energy efficiency of refrigerated merchandisers. The manufacturers' literature provides the conventional cooling capacity and evaporator temperature of the case.
