Summary

A NEW APPROACH IS PROPOSED FOR TECHNICAL, ECONOMICAL AND POWER CONSUMPTION CONSIDERATIONS DURING DESIGN COMPUTATION ON HEAT EXCHANGERS, PRESENTED IN A FORM OF COMPARATIVE STUDIES. YEARLY CAPITAL EXPENDITURES AND FIGURES ON TOTAL POWER CONSUMPTION ARE DISCUSSED. AN EXAMPLE IS GIVEN FOR AN AMMONIA SHELL-AND-TUBE EVAPORATOR WITH A SURFACE AREA OF 100 M2 AND 50 TUBE ROWS. THE A. CONCLUDES THAT IT IS DESIRABLE TO OBTAIN COMPARISONS ONLY FOR DEVICES OF ABOUT THE SAME COSTS AND THEY SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT FOR OPTIMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS. THE CALCULATIONS HE PRESENTS ALLOW TO DETERMINE OPTIMAL CONDITIONS FROM KNOWN VALUES FOR HEAT FLOW DENSITY AND COOLANT VELOCITIES. E.K.
