Summary

Low side and high side compressors are designed as vessels with different pressure levels and their internal features are with big difference in operation, especially in high compression ratio application – bigger pressure difference makes temperature, lubrication etc. much different with normal Air Conditioning application. This study is focusing on internal operating parameters of low side and high side compressors including (1) discharge temperature; (2) oil temperature, viscosity and oil film; (3) motor temperature and (4) system performance; to compare low side compressor with high side compressor in high compression ratio application. Operating envelope comparison between low side and high side will be presented and advantages/disadvantages will be discussed based on these parameters. One conclusion is that, for operation envelope and system performance, low side compressor should be more suitable for high compression ratio applications.
