IN THIS PAPER, THE TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS CORRESPONDING TO VARIOUS OPTIMA ARE DETERMINED AND COMPARED ON THE BASIS OF A VERY SIMPLE, SINGLE-TUBE HEAT RECUPERATOR. IT IS SHOWN THAT THE VARIOUS OPTIMA MAY DIFFER GREATLY FROM EACH OTHER. A NEW DIAGRAM INVOLVING ENERGY-COST CHARACTERISTIC CURVES IS PRESENTED FOR COMPARISON OF THE VARIOUS OPTIMA. POLITICAL OPTIMA CORRESPONDING TO GIVING DIFFERENT WEIGHTINGS OF THE OBJECTIVES OF SAVING MONETARY AND ENERGY COSTS CAN ALSO BE READILY IDENTIFIED.
