Comparison of refrigerating cycles with various replacements for R22.

Summary

The author compares the advantages and disadvantages of R22, R407C, R410A and R290 both theoretically and experimentally, considering thermodynamic performance, cost and effect on circuit components. He also reviews in table form the present status of regulations regarding R22 phase-out in various European countries and concludes that no substitute can have all the advantages of R22 from a technical point of view. With the exception of R407C (zeotropic) only propane has a vapour pressure curve similar to that of R22, but it cannot be used in existing plants and presents a high risk of explosion. The high solubility of R290 in oil greatly increases scratching of compressor bearings. R407C and R410A can be considered as good substitutes. R410A is preferred in most cases, due to better COP and lower pressure loss, but further development of R407C is expected in better designed and optimized units.
