Summary

The article begins with an analysis of markets. China is the fastest growing, while sales in some countries have decreased. Production of compressors in Japan has dropped by 15% for rotaries and 23% for reciprocating. Companies in the Far East are increasing capacity. Most manufacturers are designing for R134a, substitutes for R22 are still sought. R123 and R134a are replacing R11. Fewer centrifugal machines are being produced, especially in Japan. Reciprocating compressors are still in demand, though rotary and scroll are increasing in use for domestic refrigerators and air conditioners. Screw compressors are gaining popularity over centrifugals and reciprocating machines. Both twin and single screw are being made. High investment costs for quantity manufacture are resulting in mergers of many firms. In all types world production capability exceeds current demand, so competition is fierce. D.W.H.
