THE A. SUMMARISES THE MEANS FOR REDUCING THE HEAT FLOW IN THE WALLS OF COLD ROOMS AND REPORTS THE CONDITIONS OF WATER VAPOUR CONDENSATION IN AN EXTERNAL WALL ACCORDING TO ITS HEAT RESISTANCE. HE EXAMINES AND DISCUSSES THE CHARACTERISTICS OF INSULATING MATERIALS (EQUIVALENT CONDUCTIVITY), I.E. POROSITY (OVERALL OR LOCAL), VOLUMIC SURFACE, FINENESS, THE ANISOTROPIC FACTOR, THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE, STATISTICAL DISPERSION THEN HEAT TRANSFER PROCESSES (NATURAL CONVECTION, RADIATION) AND THERMAL RESISTANCE. THE ADVANCEMENT OF THE PHYSICS OF POROUS MEDIA DURING THE RECENT YEARS MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO PREDICT THE THERMAL BEHAVIOUR OF FIBROUS INSULANTS, TO OPTIMISE THEIR MANUFACTURE AND TO ENSURE THEIR THERMAL RESISTANCE.
