Contact thermal resistance measurement on finned tubes heat exchangers by infrared thermography.

Summary

Nowadays the most current technology of compact heat exchangers utilizes high density plate finned tube. Different authors investigated the problem of optimizing the design of this fundamental component of any kind of technical installations, but most of them concentrate on the effect of the geometry and material selection on thermal and hydraulic performance. A few papers have been published on experimental and theoretical techniques to determine the actual thermal resistance between the tube and the fin; all these authors agree that this problem can not be neglected. The goal of the present paper is to propose a new experimental approach to evaluate the contact thermal resistance on a finned tube heat exchanger. A remarkable advantage of this methodoly, beyond its plainness, is that thermal resistance is determined in typical working conditions.
