Summary

This study describes the problems in modelling and calculating convective heat fluxes between the gas and the side wall in the case of alternative open machines. Performances of Stirling machines depend on the simultaneous variations of internal pressure and enthalpy fluxes between the cylinders and the regenerator during cycles. An ordinary convective heat transfer model is incapable of describing heat transfer in reciprocating machines such as compressor and internal combustion engines considered as closed systems. Expressions of complex temperatures and convective heat transfer coefficients are developed from a simple conduction model. Comparisons between measured and calculated results are presented.
