Summary
The varieties Summerred and Gravenstein were stored in an atmosphere of 3% oxygen and 3% carbon dioxide at 3 deg C, while Aroma was stored in an atmosphere of 1.5% oxygen and 1.5% carbon dioxide at the same temperature. The results were compared with those of traditional cold storage. Aroma proved the best suited to controlled atmosphere storage under the conditions tested. It maintained satisfactory quality until February/March, while the other 2 varieties showed declining quality from around July.
