Summary

THE EARLY DEVELOPMENTS OF CA STORAGE ARE DISCUSSED AND REQUIREMENTS SUCH AS THE STORE, FRUIT QUALITY, PRECOOLING AND POSTHARVEST TREATMENTS ARE EMPHASISED. SOME EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN OF THE GAS CONCENTRATIONS FOR VARIOUS CULTIVARS OF APPLE AND PEAR, AND THEMEANS OF ACHIEVING THEM IN THE STORE. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT SOUTH AFRICAN CA STORAGE HAS GROWN FROM ABOUT 6,000 X 500 KG BINS IN 1978 TO AROUND 240,000 X 500 KG BINS IN 1988 AND IS STILL INCREASING. G.R.S.
