Summary

THROUGHOUT THE USA CHAINS OF SMALL RETAIL STORES ARE OPENING FOR QUICK SALES OF GROCERIES INCLUDING REFRIGERATED FOODS. AS THESE ARE SIMPLE BUILDINGS WITHOUT IN-HOUSE SERVICE STAFF, THE FACTORS APPLYING TO SYSTEM CHOICE ARE NOT THE SAME AS FOR SUPERMARKETS. THE CHOICES EXAMINED INCLUDE SELF-CONTAINED OR REMOTE CONDENSING UNITS FOR DISPLAY AND STORAGE REFRIGERATION AND THE USE OF HEAT RECLAIM FOR COMBINED HEATING AND AIR-CONDITIONING HEAT PUMP UNITS. THE RESULTS VARY MAINLY WITH THE CLIMATE OF THE LOCATION. EXTERNAL CONDENSING UNITS SAVE AIR-CONDITIONING COSTS IN WARM CLIMATES, SELF-CONTAINED UNITS DECREASE HEATING COSTS IN COOL CLIMATES. IN BETWEEN THE DECIDING FACTOR IS ONE OF FIRST-COST AND THE COST OF SERVICING. D.W.H.
