COOLDOWN BEHAVIOUR OF A SUPERCONDUCTING ROTOR: AN EXAMPLE OF TRANSIENT HEAT TRANSFER WITH HELIUM.

Author(s) : BODNER B., KOFLER H.

Summary

COOLING DOWN LARGE CRYOGENIC SYSTEMS TO THE TEMPERATURE OF LIQUID HELIUM DEMANDS CONSIDERABLE EFFORT, TIME AND COOLING FLUID. THEREFORE IT IS ADVISABLE TO STUDY THIS OPERATION MODE BOTH THEORETICALLY AND EXPERIMENTALLY. THE RESULTS OF THE THEORETICAL INVESTIGATIONS SHOULD BE RELIABLE AND SIMPLE EXPRESSIONS, WHICH PREDICT THE TEMPERATURE COURSE IN THE INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS OF THE COOLED SYSTEM. KNOWING THE TEMPERATURE GRADIENTS DURING TIME ALSO THE THERMAL STRESSES IN THE STRUCTURES CAN BE DETERMINED AS WELL AS AN EFFICIENT AND SAVE COOLING MODE. A NUMERICAL METHOD TO CALCULATE THE COOLDOWN OF THE ROTOR OF A SUPERCONDUCTING SYNCHRONOUS GENERATOR IS DESCRIBED. THE NUMERICAL RESULTS ARE COMPARED WITH MEASURED VALUES.
