Summary

The Montreal Protocol and the ensuing amendments will have as many consequences for cooling at low temperatures as for every other branch of the industry. The most important refrigerants currently in use for this purpose, R13B1, R13 and R22, are halons or contain chlorofluorocarbons in any event, and will no longer be available in the future. The article provides information about the future for cooling at low temperatures. The refrigerants which will still be obtainable will be discussed and compared with the practical requirements for refrigeration systems. The article deals mainly with vapour compression systems in the range of -40 to -100 deg C although absorption and open systems and systems which work at even lower temperatures will be mentioned.
