Correlations for boiling in fibrous porous structures.

Summary

Experimental data of boiling heat transfer are discussed for two types of surfaces with porous covering, one with a flat surface and the other with fins. The capillary-porous layer was manufactured out of finely cut copper wires (diameter 0.05 mm, length 3 mm). The covering was characterised by the lack of closed pores, therefore the whole space of the porous structure was totally permeable. The porosity of investigated samples varied from 40 to 85% and their thickness was 0.2-2.0 mm. The experiments were carried out for water, ethanol and R113; substantial enhancement of heat transfer coefficient was observed for these surfaces. Correlations for heat transfer coefficient were developed, with good agreement with test measurements.
