Cost-effectiveness of cold stores in Jordan.

Author(s) : AYYASH S., ASFAN M. J. I.

Summary

Applications of cold storage in Jordan are rather limited in scope and volume. Most of the available storage capacity is used to store agricultural products. This situation is due to several factors: the agriculture sector in the country is rather small; agricultural holding are, generally speaking, of small and medium size; technical and engineering know-how in cold storage is not fully developed yet; it is generally taken that the running cost of cold stores is rather high. Recent phenomena in the country, however, suggest changing trends. Agriculture is receiving more attention than before. This is particularly true for fruits which are receiving special attention. Further, conditioning and refrigeration is expanding and strengthening. The establishment of a local industry of air conditioning and refrigeration has been supportive in building local expertise. The paper aims at exploring the cost-effectiveness of cold stores in Jordan.
